How we fit laminate flooring, step by step.

A good floor depends more on preparation than on the laminate itself. Here is how we work – from the home visit to the last piece of skirting.

In short

Fitting laminate with us takes five steps: a free home visit and subfloor check, removing the old floor if needed, letting the laminate acclimatise for 24–48 hours, laying it on underlay with an expansion gap along the walls and, finally, skirting, threshold strips and clean-up. Fitting is usually 1–3 days after the visit and costs from €11 per m², with travel anywhere in the Burgas region included.

1. Home visit and subfloor check

At the visit we measure the rooms and check three things: how level, how dry and how solid the subfloor is. Laminate is a floating floor – it is not glued or nailed down but rests on underlay. That is why the subfloor must be firm and level. On an uneven base laminate creaks, the joints open up and, over time, the locking edges of the boards break.

If the subfloor is uneven, we suggest levelling it before we start. We give you the price on the spot.

2. Removing the old floor

Carpet, vinyl and old laminate come up, because the base underneath stays soft or uneven. On sound, level tiles or concrete, laminate can go straight down. Removal costs €4 per m², and we take the waste away.

3. Acclimatisation

Laminate is made from wood fibre and reacts to temperature and humidity. Manufacturers recommend leaving the closed packs in the room where they will be laid for 24–48 hours. Skip this and the floor can swell a few weeks later.

That is why fitting is usually 1–3 days after the visit – the acclimatisation time is built into that window.

4. Underlay and laying

  • The underlay insulates against cold and noise and evens out small irregularities.
  • An expansion gap is left along the walls, around pipes and at thresholds so the laminate can move freely.
  • The joints between rows are staggered so the floor is strong and looks natural.
  • Doors are trimmed if the new floor has raised the level and they start to catch.

Standard fitting uses the click system and costs €11 per m². For heavy use, or if you prefer, the joints are glued as well – €13 per m².

5. Skirting, threshold strips and clean-up

Skirting covers the expansion gap along the walls, and threshold strips cover the join to the tiles or the next room. Finally, we take the waste away and clean up, so the room is ready for the furniture.

How to prepare

  • Clear the room of furniture and belongings – we work faster and there is no risk of damage.
  • Buy the laminate in good time so it can rest in the room. Get 5–10% extra to allow for cutting.
  • If you are not sure how much to buy, wait for the visit – we will tell you the exact area.

How long fitting takes

A 15–20 m² room is usually done in a few hours, and a 60–70 m² flat in one to two days, depending on the subfloor and the number of rooms.

FAQ

Questions about fitting.

What is the difference between click fitting and glued fitting?

With click fitting the boards lock into each other without glue. It is the standard method and costs €11 per m². With glued fitting the joints are glued as well, which makes them more resistant to moisture. It costs €13 per m². We will advise you at the visit which method suits your home.

Can laminate go in a kitchen or bathroom?

In a kitchen – yes, with a water-resistant laminate and care around the sink. We do not recommend laminate in a bathroom, where water is constant.

Why does laminate need to rest before fitting?

Laminate expands and contracts as temperature and humidity change. That is why manufacturers recommend leaving it in the room where it will be laid for 24–48 hours.

Can laminate go over an old floor?

Over level, sound tiles or concrete – yes. Carpet, vinyl and old laminate have to come up, because the subfloor must be firm and level.

How much laminate should I buy?

The floor area plus 5–10% for cutting. If you are not sure, wait for the visit – we will tell you the exact amount.
